5 cheap restaurants in Venice

September 20, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Venice is one of the top vacation destinations in the world and every year, millions of tourists flock to this gem of the Adriatic, so it is not easy to find where to eat well and at affordable prices. The trick is, as usual, to eat where the Venetians eat and in this little guide we will show you some of those hidden places.

Restaurants Venice

For the most restless travelers who just want to take a little break while doing sightseeing, Gaetano Ruiz (Barbaria of Tole 6672) is their flagship. Located in the Castello neighborhood, it offers take away only and you can get a serving of pasta and two calzone pizzas (enough for two people) for less than 10 euros. Ideal when visiting the Rialto Bridge area.

The Cannaregio district offers best options in terms of restaurants, as it is not as busy with tourists. La Cantina (Strada Nova, 3689) is a small winery of modest exterior that does not honor their tasty dishes and excellent wines. There is a daily menu, dishes are prepared with fresh products they buy every day in the Rialto market and is a pleasure to be surprised by their friendly and expert cook, Francesco. Prices per dish range from 15 to 30 euros and are usually enough to share between two people. Try fresh seafood, or, if you prefer meat, their are prepared dishes with venison, duck or quail which are exceptional, as well as the selection of local cheeses for dessert. With its tiny dimensions, it is advisable to go early or book a table beforhand.

The Bar Leon d´Oro (Rio Tera della Maddalena, 2345) is another indispensable place to visit in Cannareggio. This family restaurant has a warm and friendly atmosphere where you can enjoy a homemade meal. Traditional dishes, among which we find gnocchi with crab and tagliolini with calamaretti neri (black noodles with squid), as well as delicious cakes and desserts. The first courses ranges from 8 to 12 euros and the second ones between 14 and 20 euros.

The Osteria Bea Vita (Fondamenta delle Cappuccine, 3082) is a warm and small trattoria whose tiramisu is legendary. Generous portions and local products, among which we recommend tuna with sesame crust and antipasti (appetizers)of fish . The lunch menu, with first and second course with wine costs 13 euros, while a “a la carte” dinner of two courses, dessert and drinks costs around 35 euros per person. If the weather allows it, choose one of the outdoor tables overlooking the canal, you will have great views and total tranquility.

Finally, we suggest leaving Venice and visiting the small island of Sant´Erasmo to enjoy the magical family restaurant Ca ´Vignotto (via Forti 71). Open since 1958, is an old country house with beautiful gardens, which the Venetians go to enjoy their flagship product: six plates of seafood specialties (more than enough for two), accompanied by all the wine that you may be able to drink, all for 55 euros. Try also the exquisite cake with fig jam with cinnamon.

A possible tour around the Bacaros of Venice

August 16, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

It is said that the time curves, as the space in which we normally live and that we are able to find right in the fold, a constant in all periods of art, and perhaps different illustrative movements, the metaphor of the world and its most suitable neo-baroque worldview. In a few places things tell us more strictly convinced of this possibility as the winding canals of Venice, a city where everything folds, unfolds and folds again continuously to trace the labile and trembling drawing of the border that separates the two sides of the dancelike musical vibration that the cosmos creates.

tour around the bacaros venice

Traveling around them by vaporetto or gondola is not difficult to feel an ineffable feeling of dizziness and loss of referrals. It is then, when we feel that the reality principle disappears and we do not know where or at what time we are and as a consequence the famous bacaros are offered as comforting endowed with the power to return us to a center where we are safe.

There are not more traditional bars in Venice as the unforgettable bacaros, small establishments in hallways or rooms in tiny and often poorly illuminated places that often offer an excellent range of local snacks as snacks and wines at prices more than reasonable (if one does not commit the rookie mistake of sitting, in which case the payable amount will probably be twice). The client is serving himself deploying and appetizing dishes and before he leaves he pays for everything consumed, similar to what happens in the pintxos bars in the Basque Country.

In Cannaregio 2329, right in front of Magdalena’s church, the Cantina Vecchia Carbonera Bacaro gathers a young and fun clientele, partly because of its Sunday jam sessions but despite or precisely because of its simplicity, its beautiful dark wood flooring makes it attractive to the eyes.

Considerably more modern in appearance and mainly specialized in cheese, equally compelling is the Cavatappi Bacaro, which has a suggestive terrace between San Marcos and Campo Santa Maria Formosa.

Al Prosecco Bacaro (Cannaregio 1503) also boasts a great variety of cheese, at, which while being located in San Giacomo dall ´Orio, a neighborhood outside of the tour, offered as a few other real experiences of taking a bite into a genuine Venetian bacaro.

It would be also unforgettable to visit the ancient Cantinone Bacaro, located in Dorsoduro 992, just opposite the picturesque gondolas workshop in San Trovaso, where the wide range of wines fights with the one of Rivetta Bacaro de Santa Croce 637 in everything but the price, because in the latter mentioned you can drink a good barrel wine for sixty cents a glass.

What to Do with a Teetotaler in Venice

April 17, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Sometimes we find that we don’t always have the same preferences as our partners. Whether music, movies, food, activities in summer or winter, there are times when we don’t see eye to eye. Usually you can find a compromise when you are choosing a destination, planning dinners or nights out as a pair. But what do you do if your partner doesn’t drink alcohol but you especially enjoy going to parties and drinking alcohol, cocktails and wine? Venice, like much of Italy, offers some of the best wines in the world. So, what do you do?

teetotaler venice

Choosing not to drink may stem from age restrictions or customs and traditions. Health reasons is often stated as one of the most frequently given reasons for not drinking alcohol, and your partner may not want to have his or her body altered. From allergies to liver problems or digestive issues, it is true that alcohol may not be healthy for everyone. Of course, people say that wine is a good for you and helps foster good circulation and heart health. Unfortunately, however, we cannot all drink and eat the same things. Respect your partner’s health choices and agree to choose an option that will be agreeable to him or her.

Other important reasons for abstaining from alcohol could be previous addictions or alcoholism. If your partner has chosen not to drink for this reason, it is important for you to accept and respect this decision and above all, to help his or her recovery. Alcoholism is without a doubt a difficult problem to overcome, perhaps even more so than if he or she were recovering form illegal drugs. Alcohol is a socially accepted drug and available practically everywhere you go, which makes the possibility of relapse very real since it is so very accessible.

On the other hand, your partner may have been told or seen first hand that alcohol can do great damage, or perhaps it is simply against his or her beliefs. Tolerance is important in any relationship, and you should learn to respect the decision of your beloved. Traumatic childhood experiences may be another possible reason for abstaining from alcohol. The emotional and physical state of each person can also be affected by alcohol, depending on the character of the person with whom one is involved. In each of these cases, you should speak with him or her in confidence. In Venice, one can enjoy a variety of non-alcoholic drinks in addition to the excellent wines. This way, your partner can accompany you while you enjoy a cocktail or beer and there’s no need to change your trip.

Sensuality and Venice

April 11, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Each city is a body. Imagine that each area of your city is an organ, a piece of skin or hair. Some parts of this body are hidden and others revealed; they are shown with no shame, while hypnotizing us, attracting or repelling us. Imagine the city, as the path of a body that can be a different travel mode if you put your mind on it, a way of understanding the paths through space without the typical clichés of urban tourism, maps or guidebooks.

sensualidad venecia

What is the sensuality of a city made of? Just walk the streets, see its public spaces, shops, restaurants, the provision of space and how it is organized, while approaching the pace of the city and get lost in it. Everybody’s different, and similarly, each city ids different: different breath, different flows, different forms of expression and different dreams. If we think of a city like New York, we realize that the pace of this city´s breathing is accelerated. Just by watching people walking back and forth with a firm, quick step, without seeing much on the sides but rather predisposed to come to some essential destination. Whether work, school or fun, you´ll notice that an excess of cultural, visual and media surrounds the citizens of New York. Thus, the sensual experience in this city can be somehow impersonal but equally disturbing and emotionally charged.

The pace of a city like Venice is completely different, event to the point of being the complete opposite side of New York. While the influx of curious tourists who invade Venice is very high, the city continues to maintain a personal one, which traces its roots in historical and artistic way, which is internationally acknowledged. The breath of Venice is aquatic; think of Venice as an amphibian, houses, neighborhoods and old buildings intersected by canals and traditional gondolas, serving as a route and means of transport respectively in the wet body of the Italian city. A tour of Venice invites you to walk alongside these winding and wide veins of water, discovering spring nights where the temperature grabs you and shakes you, bars and restaurants where the best Italian wines are at your disposal and a lot of good art.

Encouraging imagination and our desire for sensuality and pleasure is certainly essential in any of our trips and new discoveries. Don’t allow your travel adventures to become a mechanical experience. Keep the imagination of your senses awaken in each of your vacation trips and business visits. Any journey is an excuse to get lost in the living body of our cities and re-discover ourselves.
