The city of Venice is one of the most romantic in the world for how singular its architecture and social organization is. The canals are famous all around the world and getting to know this city is an objective that many travellers aim to achieve one day.

But the city which also offers never ending possibilities in the fields of gastronomy, history, culture and even clubbing, is one of the most famous hosts of the best international art exhibitions. Although it’s also the home of many museums of social relevance, such as the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, which has a place in the city, but its exhibitions travel around the world and are famous for being really exclusive and of unsurpassable quality.

Peggy Guggenheim was a woman dedicated to art. She was a collector during the 20th century and that’s why her collection is exhibited in the museum which bears her name. The building that holds the museum used to be her home and she later opened it to the public, to share with the city she loved so much, all the art that she’d valued and bought during her whole life.

During October 2011 up until January 2012, the exhibition called ‘Themes and Variations. Script and Space’ will be open to the public in this great museum in Venice. It’s an exhibition which reveals the post-war society, the psyche of people demolished by misery and famine, which makes it a greatly interesting exhibition to visit because it was prepared exclusively for the city of the canals, with works belonging to the Peggy Guggenheim collection and some other ones lent by other international museums.

Some of the authors that you’ll be able to recognize in the exhibition are Novelli, Picasso, Agnetti and some more contemporary than others, but all of the same artistic conditions.

From the 4^th of September until de 9^th of January 2011 the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery in Venice is going to show “Retrospective” an exhibition dedicated to the art of Adolph Gottlieb.

This painter, engraver and sculptor was born in New York in 1903 and died in Long Island, New York in 1974. He studied at the Art Students League in New York, as well as in France and in Germany. Founder of the group “The Ten” and member of the group “New York Artist Painters”, he and his genius friends, such as Mark Rothko and John Graham, had a great impact on the art world. This distinct creator became famous for being one of the promoters of abstract expressionism.

Deeply influenced by the European avant-garde, he was renowned for his famous “pictographies” which he created in the Arizona desert. Throughout his life he received various prizes, such as the “Brooklyn Society of Artists Prize”, and recognition at the “VII Biennale de Sao Paulo, Brazil”, just to name a few. In 1970 he suffered a serious accident, which left his left arm and legs paralyzed, although he never stopped painting.

In this exhibition we will see more than 60 works of art and his sculptural work, representing different creative stages in his ouevre. Throughout all of these periods the use of colour is always present, although there were also moments when he was experimenting with black and white. Paintings are often divided horizontally, further fractured into circles in different colours. He also frequently used motifs like small structures full of symbols or signs.

The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation in New York and the American Contemporary Art Gallery in Munich joined forces for this spectacular event, a which is also supported by private collections and a number of museums.

What is a fun holiday with friends without some old fashion games? Whether it is just a weekend trip or a special occasion (25th Birthday, bachelor party…) you will literally die laughing. You need one or two people organizing, they can run with the groups to take funny photos of them or just relax on a terrace with an ice-cream. We are going on a scavenger hunt in the middle of Venice!

How you adapt this game is completely up to you, we will just give you the basics and some cool ideas. Divide your friends into two teams. The teams will have to collect objects and information; they will get 3 points per object, 5 points for every piece of correct information and minus 2 points for any wrong object / info. The losers will pay the drinks tonight! You hand both teams a piece of paper with the items that they have to gather. There is only one rule: they cannot spend money.

A good starting and ending point is the Piazza San Marco. The centre of Venice is pretty compact, so you can lead them to the important places. Here are some ideas of how to lure them to the main sights:

• Peggy Guggenheim museum: She was buried next to her twelve dogs. Name 5 of them. (Emily, Baby, Gypsy, Hong Kong, Cappuccino for example)
• Saint Mark’s Basilica: How many bronze horses do you see? (4)
• Campo Santa Margherita: collect 5 paper napkins, each with a different restaurant name or logo.
• Take a photo of someone in your group with a Venetian mask.
• What is special about the Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto? (It is the oldest church in Venice)
• Rialto Bridge: Obtain a souvenir related to the rialto bridge. Remember, you cannot spend money, so be creative!
• Doge’s Palace: What is the Bocca Di Leone? Take a photo of the inscription (see photo).
• Basílica di Santa Maria Della Salute: which famous artist contributed a self portrait in the Great Sacristy? (The answer is Tintoretto, entrance to the church is for free)
• Ca’ Rezzonico: Get a museum guide in Italian.

Other assignments can include obtaining a used museum ticket, to take a photo in a gondola, to collect five pigeon feathers on St. Mark’s square, get an autograph of a tourist from London or to take a photo of a vaporetti.
