Open 14 in Venice: Exhibition of Sculpture and Installation

September 23, 2011 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

The ability of sculpture to capture the public has over years perhaps lessened somewhere, thanks to constantly updated new means of creation in art – giving the impression that sculpture has been cast to one side by other more modern media such as video, conceptual and minimal art, and painting which seems to always stay around in one manifestation or another. However, the history of sculpture makes us see the reality of the fact that it is without a doubt the predecessor of many other forms of art – and that its relation with architecture is an extremely close one. From the monoliths on the ancient temples, the interaction with three dimensional materials has always been present. The size of sculpture has always functioned as a way of making statements in public spaces, and to direct people down an unexpected emotional route.

When we think of sculpture we always think of Venus de Milo and of course David – that pursuit of creating the perfect human form; to want to create the possibility, and image of a body which is almost a divine experience to look at. It is without a doubt the ancient Greek sculpture which is the finest example of this – the making of the artist of the ideal proportions of a humanity which has never been “perfect.” The body then takes supreme importance in the birth of philosophy – things which had not been studied before. It was all about the best way to depict a certain muscle, and which materials to use in order to reach divine perfection.

Much other sculpture has been of great importance, particularly on a religious and military level – sculptures have served as a form of defense of different religions, and also to celebrate massacre, acts of war, the conquering of land, to name just a very few examples. References to god and the almighty have always gone hand in hand with the artistic rendering of beauty.

And with modernity and the avantgarde of course all of this was shaken up once again, with sculpture becoming something else entriely – an anarchic exercise, something which went against the system, which could be both invisible and conceptual, and used unconventional and non-classical materials like rubbish or even the flesh of real animals. Sculpture came to be a discipline which attempted to disarm and discuss contemporary morals, and actively question all kinds of politics. Open 14 presents the most recent of sculpture and contemporary installation in a space which seeks to identify a contrast the latest mediums of artistic expressions in the art market, drawing attention to the issues prevalent today. Captain America & Berlusconi

September 09, 2011 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Of all the possible heroes, Captain America is not exactly the best demonstration of the inverse fascism of mass culture. Retracing the history, and motives, the way that the character, which is now over 50 years old, was created, is of particular importance in this day and age, with people such as Berlusconi, Zapatero, Chavez, and Obama and other supposed “defendants” of “democracy” tending instead to hide secret plans, or different political agendas which are of little help to the people, and which really have very little to do with the democracy or rights of the people – but rather, with corruption, mafia, the abuse of power, violence and war.

captain america

Captain America belongs to that golden age of comic books in the United States, but it went on to enjoy a second round of triumph, in what is known as the “Silver Age.” Captain America’s story is one of pure “American Hero.” Born on the 4th of July, Steve Rogers is a boy from New York who in the face of the bloody saga of the Second World War, Hitler, fascism, and the potential end of the world impending, decides to enlist himself in the North American military forces to “serve his country” and defend it from the threats of the Third Reich. So, after passing some tests, he is rejected for not fulfilling all the necessary requisites. However, after offering himself up for a secret experiment being conducted by the American government, who is looking for a “Super Soldier”, Steve Rogers becomes “Captain America”, with superhuman powers, and speed, and a uniform made from the colours of the American flag, and a shield made from indestructible material, with which he heads off into the war zones to oversee the North American army’s battle against the Third Reich. With the passing of the years, the figure of the character changed considerably – the comic books killed him off, and resuscitated him, making the leader of a group of superheroes by Marvel Comics called The Avengers.

These days, the new version of Captain America reflects this history, and illustrates once again that the ideologies all remain the same, even if the contexts can be manipulated. In a situation of global crisis, with people like Berlusconi, who uses power and corruption to get whatever takes his fancy, where are the real superheroes? When will they start to write stories in which people like Berlusconi are the “evil” enemy – who amongst us is the real “baddie” – and who should be the new face of post-modern heroism? This film harks back to the days of the Second World War and the dangers of fascism – because the idea of the “Super Soldier” and the “American Hero” has little relevance to the times we are living in. Any corporation is in its way fascist in essence. For more information about Captain America, visit http://marvel.com/

Sexual compatibility

September 10, 2010 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

To find what you want, the first step is to know yourself. If we do not know what we are looking for, how do we expect to find the right partner? If you don’t even know what you are looking for you may never find it. What do we want, what do we need, what are our desires, what excites us, what do we find sexy? If we respond to all these questions we have completed the most important step.

One of the most important things to guarantee having amazing is amazing to have a partner who wants to have the same type of amazing sex you do. If you’re single and you are inundated doubts about where to go, take note of what you like. And if you are working to maintain a relationship, try to create environments that you like to get the perfect sexual environment.

However, this compatibility does not always occur; it’s possible to be in love with someone, but platonically. It is a great disappointment to realize that you are not 100 percent compatible as a couple, and it sometimes takes a while to know what’s good for you. A good way to find out if you’re made for each other in every way is to enjoy a holiday together. So where to go? Although there are thousands of destinations you could choose, the best bet is somewhere romantic, like the city of canals. There, just rent one of the apartments in Venice and enjoy the hidden secrets of one of the most vibrant cities in Europe.

Without doubt, passing through the classic channels can become a journey of discovery, both personal and sexual. Making the trip might be tough, because without a doubt, the greatest fear in relationships is finding out the person you thought was the one, well, just isn’t. But don’t get discouraged, because there is someone out there that will complement you perfectly.

There is NO

September 08, 2010 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Sex can be a game or even better, several games all at once. We can enjoy new situations, transform into fantastic characters and amazing superheroes. We can practice a thousand positions and enjoy every moment. And we can do whatever we want, with no limits and no rules except one: No means No. That is any kind of sex must be 100% consensual, otherwise, we would be committing a crime: rape. This occurs when performing a sexual act where one of the two parties does not consent to sex, and it becomes a situation where force is used. Never mind that the other person is your partner, if she says no, the sex has to stop… (And shouldn’t have even started!).  Other situations that are rape? Having sex with somebody who cannot give consent because they are intoxicated, drugged or asleep.

Some types of rape occur more frequently in couples than they should. The problem arises when one party wants sex and the other doesn’t. What do we do? Of course, never force the other person to have sex. Another problem arises when we believe that the other person, by saying NO, is joking or just trying to excite their partner by simulating a “violent” situation.  Yes, this can be a real problem: it’s important to talk with your partner about any role-playing, establish a safe word if you are delving into the world of BDSM and know when to stop.

In any case, after establishing the limits of the relationship live out your wildest and most morbid fantasies in the city of canals. Rent one of the many available apartments in Venice and start enjoying all the secrets and stories that fill the beautiful Italian city. Shut yourselves up in the room and give free rein to your imagination, but always keep in mind  that sex,  with strangers, your partner  or in  group, is not just about your pleasure, but also have the satisfaction of  others, and mutual consent.
