Tips to enjoy Venice

January 31, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Venice still attracts many tourists who come to this city in search of its romantic little streets, museums, sailing of course in its canals and gondolas and many other attractions offered by this wonderful city. However, it is important to offer some information to make your trip much more interesting and likewise helpful. As always it depends on the type of trip you want to achieve, what are your expectations and that what you want to find.

tips venice

Usually it’s best to go at your own pace, to explore the city on your own. If you only have a few days and your short of time perhaps a tour guide may be the best option. When choosing a guide, try beforehand to find some information about him or the company he works for on the internet. Plenty online forums have recommendations and comments about the various services available in the city. If a guide is known and efficient, you will find him it in the network, or at his tour company. Guides are better in groups, on the internet you can also find people looking to tour with groups, which will be useful to make more friends and acquaintances.

If you prefer to be alone, do not hesitate to use applications for your smart phone, those that let you know the city at your own pace and without missing any tourist attraction. Just search the web for a variety of applications for mobile phones. Some are free, and give full explanations of what to find in the cities you visit, from restaurants to museums, recreation areas, and bars.

Going to Venice can be a bit uncomfortable due to the large number of tourists visiting the city on a daily basis. As you can imagine, pickpocketing is normal as in all tourist populated cities Always carry your personal belongings in a small purse, always keep it close to you. Never take more than you truly need during your journey through a city you visit. For example, a good package for a day trip includes your camera of course, necessary documentation, some money and maybe something light to eat and a bottle of water. Leave other personal effects in your hostel or wherever you are resting. Try to be practical in your journey and lighten your load, so you enjoy better all the wonders that Venice has to offer.

Being a tourist town, many people speak English in Venice. Try to communicate in that language if you find it handy, and it does not hurt to know some Italian words like hello, goodbye, asking for the bill, ask for permission, thanks, apologies, etc.. Knowing something of the language of the place you visit that is always practical and allows for a better communication with the people you meet in different areas of the city. You will find that the Venetians are very friendly and cordial.

The mystery of the vampire of Venice

January 26, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

The finding in Venice by the team led by anthropologist Matteo Borrini of a female skull belonging to the middle of the sixteenth century with a brick in her mouth, a ritual attributed to creatures killed by the plague has provided scientific data than previously was considered a legend. But it wasn’t a legend as the Black Death plague which besieged the city. The island of Lazzaretto Nuovo is already known for the dead bodies killed by this plague that have been found. Near the site of the discovery there used to be a hospital to treat these patients. In this way we hear about old legends that spoke of Venetian female vampires in the city. According to the data that come from that era, it seems that the more the plague expanded, the more they thought then that vampires spread the disease and were the true carriers of the plague. It is quite likely to be associated to vampires as carriers of the disease by the trail of blood in the mouth or nose that were found in the corpses victims of the plague (known respectively as hemoptysis and epistaxis, ). The vampires were recognized for their extreme passion and need to feed on the blood and energy of the living. Inserting a brick or a stake in the mouth, the vampire could not chew and therefore could no longer spread its evil again.

mistery vampire venice

In summary, according to legend, these living dead fed on the plague-infested bodies in their coffins and through their bites would spread the disease.

The results of this archaeological find show us that the vampire women was around 61 and 71 years old when she died, an age which is quite high for the average survival time back then. This will add fuel to the mystery. This plague dwindled the Venetian population to less a third of its inhabitants . It is considered that it ended on July 13, 1577.

To understand this type of burial and the figure of the vampire as a carrier of the plague’s we must go back to the figure of c, Anglo-Saxon term that comes from the German words (Nacht, Night) and Zehra (eater).

In some cultures it is dead or drowned children drowned by their own amniotic fluid. In the Polish theory (which might have influenced the Italian, for at that time there were many Poles in Venice), the Nachzeher itself is seen as a vampire, but has not become one , and wanders in a limbo between humans and vampires . Not being a full vampire, it would be in a half sleep state, neither awake nor asleep, and chew his shroud or clothing and parts of his body, like his hands or lips. It was believed that this shroud protected the plague of disease Nachzeher and grave robbers seek these shrouds to protect themselves against the plague. To stop them, they must put stones, coins, bricks in their mouths something than left them totally inoperative.

Calatrava Bridge in Venice

December 29, 2011 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

The construction of a bridge can be decisive in many ways. The question is to what extent a bridge is used as a pretext to obtain more funds that are not necessarily expected to exceed the expectations of local governments and, above all, are not what the general public wants. The utility and functionality of many public spaces can not really be expected to effectively have results until they are established and put to work.
calatrava bridge venice

Today, it’s an effort to take the city “one step beyond.” These efforts of modernity and “gentrification” are always suspicious. We do not really know where it will go, until we see them in front of our houses, dragging neighboring small shops or other places due to the great rise of rents is the cost of modernity. Perhaps there was so much controversy about this bridge, considering that its establishment or structure was too modern for Venice, its construction took longer than expected, its cost was too high and among many other ” buts “.
had no fixed name until the inauguration,

Thus, the Calatrava Bridge or Bridge of the Constitution, which opened in 2008, somehow resists the weight of the controversy by representing both the city and the architectural project. This bridge was the fourth bridge over the canal in Venice that connects the Piazalle Rome with the Santa Lucia train station. The fourth bridge to be built since the sixteenth century. The structure of the steel arch is deployed from one bank to another, as in one piece that folds extending from one side to another, generating an extremely interesting tension in materials as well as having a slightly flexible composition. The bridge also has a structure that shines on the stream channel and provides an interesting view of classical Venice. This bridge is perhaps the symbol of risky modernity and the risk to modernize a very traditional place like Venice.

But returning to the dispute, it should be remembered that this proposed project with a funding of around 7 million euros end up costing more than 11 million. In 2009, there were complaints about the stability of the bridge and the imminent danger of crossing it. The architect refused this condition, so did the authorities.

Venice is not less Venice l for having a bridge of this style in its outlook. Quite the contrary. Its presence does not ensure a decisive change in the configuration of the city. Yes, it is clear above all that the functionality of the bridge is maintained. As by chance or curiosity of an ancient city, which borders perhaps in the mysticism of its history and the stories written about her, the Calatrava Bridge is worth being crossed and looked at closely. Santiago Calatrava’s projects are generally very interesting

to learn more about these, please visit the following website: http://www.calatrava.com/

Advice to save money in Venice

December 27, 2011 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Venice is a city that nobody should miss out on. Strangely beautiful, it produces that magnificent feeling of living hanging in time, with its gondolas and canals which make it a sailable city. However, that beauty is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and for that we’ll give you some tips on how to fully enjoy your stay.

advice save money venice

To get to know every one of the little corners of this old city, you should organize a tour whose routes you can do by walking, because transport is expensive. Also, remember that this city is only small and you only need to buy a map which guides you around the streets which, many times, are like a labyrinth.

An example of this is going to St Marco Square, a place which everyone knows from the postcards, film or television, but being there is a unique experience. From there you can go to everywhere which surrounds it which is full of history. This tour lasts a day.

Don’t try and find a cheap restaurant in this area, and remember that the furthers from St Marco Square, the better the prices and the quality. So the best thing to do is make some snacks for the day and spend big for dinner.

A good tip is to have a heavy apéritif around about 6pm at the Piazza Santa Margarita. The custom is to have a Spritz, the typical alcoholic apéritif of reddish colour obtained from the mix of red wine with soda water. It’s very tasty, soft and cheap, and you’ll feel like another local celebrating this ritual.

A great idea for a cheap and cheerful dinner, more than in other places, is to go to Osteria Antico Dolo, located in an old brothel next to the Rialto Market. It has the best Venetian and Italian menus which can be enjoyed in a small dining room, family style. The menu and the prices can be consulted on http://www.anticodolo.it/, and you can even make a booking in advance so you ensure yourself a table and try its exquisite food.

If one of your obsessions in Venice is to take back a typical Venetian mask, don’t look for them in the mask shops because the prices are unreachable. The best thing to do is to look for them in souvenir shops and imitation markets, where you’ll find them just as beautiful as the original ones but at half the price.

Venice has 120 islands, all of them connected by bridges, many of them full of history such as the Ponte dei Sospiri, whose name comes from the sighs of the arrested ones who crossed it to go to prison. It’s close to St Marco Square and it links the Palazzo Ducale with the State Prisons.

But if you’re tired of crossing bridges, you can use this city’s peculiar transport. Despite the gondolas being the symbol of the city, beautiful and romantic, remember that it’s Venice’s most expensive transport, and that for 45 minutes you’ll have to pay close to 70 euros. If you want to have a romantic stroll in one with your partner at night, you’ll have to pay 80 euros.

We recommend that you use the Vaporetto, an aquatic bus which can take you to the islands of the lagoon of Venice for 6.50 euros. To decrease the spending in transport buy a Venice Card, which costs, if you’re between 18 and 24 years of age, 18 euros for 72 hours of transport.

The Magic of the Gondolas in Venice

December 20, 2011 By: veniceblogger Category: Venice

Sure, everyone remembers 1984, particularly because it was the year that Madonna began her particularly frantic conquest on the world. There was another song but “Like a Virgin” without a doubt made her the undisputed Queen of Pop. Of course, MTV was a world reference and the video “Like a Virgin” would strengthen the impact of such a hot topic .

gondolas venice

To remember the video is almost to live it, and of course, Madonna departs from New York and goes s to Venice, she walks through the streets, dressed as a bride, a lion appears by her side and she sings, jumps and bounces in a gondola through the old channels, not just turning the song into an anthem of the postmodern eighties of free love, but also bringing punk and a romantic attitude to merge in one of the most romantic cities in the world. In the video, the gondola tour shows us the magic of Venice with the music of Madonna, a perfect combination.

But how is it nowadays to be on a moving gondola? just as magical but surely quite different. It is known that around the eighteenth century there were thousands of gondolas in Venice. Today, around 400 are still sailing. The canals of Venice are quite deep, the gondoliers oar does not reach the bottom of the water so just be very careful about falling into it. It is said that early last century, the gondola had a sort of cabin in which people could sit, especially to avoid possible moments of rain or cold. However, these were withdrawn with the intention of selling the sights to tourists and the curious ones who wanted to see the city from a different point of view and take millions of photographs of the channels. Nearly all the Gondolas are available for tourists to travel in. Although now a gondola is a symbol of “cool” in city of canals, years ago, they were were used as public transportation, ie, all the Venetians had access to them. Today, they retain their old character, curiosity and tradition for visitors coming to this beautiful city.

Gondolas of course have changed, and over the years have gone through several modifications. It is a matter of culture to keep those who still have a classic style to be of interest to travelers. These vessels are admired throughout the world as the most romantic vehicle to express love, and are made out of different types of wood, from oak to cedar. Usually the left side is longer than the right side of this vessel, thereby facilitating rowing in the Venetian canals. As you can imagine, besides being used for racing and some rowing competitions, gondolas are also the charm of those newly married couples, looking to find a tour through the canals of Venice, the essence of eternal love.

Prices for a gondola ride in Venice are different, usually you can save some cash if you take the trip during the early hours of the morning or just before noon. later on, due to the romanticism of the sunsets, plus you get a gondola serenade while walking, borders makes the price vary between 50 and 100 euros for a journey of nearly an hour. The price will also vary, of course, according to the quality and aesthetics of the gondola you choose.
