Contemporary Art in Venice

February 21, 2012 By: veniceblogger Category: Uncategorized

The small city of canals, where everything is old and full of history, has been opening its doors slowly to Contemporary Art, despite the reluctance of the locals. The Venetians are particularly conservative when it comes to art and the arrival of new trends on the island has been at the hands of foreign initiatives. It currently has several museums that will delight lovers of this discipline and those who want to escape some of the many works of Renaissance Venice and see the new cutting edge.

- Center Punta della Dogana (Customs Point): This old building from the fifteenth century was dedicated to the inspection of goods entering Venice and offers spectacular views of the Grand Canal. It opened in 2009, and is the center of recent contemporary art of the island and is managed by the foundation of billionaire Francois Pinault. The entrepreneur, known for his luxury empire, with brands like Gucci, abandoned his business career to pursue his passion, art. The restoration of the building was entrusted to architect Tadao Ando and the works are from Pinault’s personal collection of authors like Takashi Murakami or Jeff Koons. New talent and the more radical works have a place in the museum.

- Palazzo Grassi (http://www.palazzograssi.it/index.html): The last palace built in Venice, after the fall of the Republic in 1797. Pinault acquired it from the wealthy Agnelli family and has also been restored by Tadao Ando. It is considered a jewel of contemporary architecture, which combines neoclassical style with modern updates made by Ando. Temporary exhibitions and more than 2500 works from Pinault’s personal collection can be seen there. On their website, shared with  Punta della Dogana, you can buy tickets and find other useful information.

- Peggy Guggenheim Collection (http://www.guggenheim-venice.it/default.html): The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, a unfinished building of  the eighteenth century, acquired by Peggy Guggenheim, is home to this museum. The American owner of a contemporary art gallery in New York, was invited in 1947 to present his collections at the Venice Biennale. A year later, she bought the building and transformed it into a museum to exhibit works. Here Jackson Pollock presented his first exhibition in Italy. Until her death in 1979, she gave ongoing support to new artists. Today, it is managed by its foundation and is one of the most important modern art museums in the world.

- The Galleria (http://www.galerie.vanderkoelen.de/): Property of the German gallery exhibitor  Dorothea van der Koelen, is an elegant museum with works of about 30 artists from 15 countries. It has its own section of publications, which have great importance, and organizes  numerous conferences and exhibitions.
